Deutsche Telekom: Connecting Employees Across a Global Organization

Client: Deutsche Telekom AG

Goal: Strengthen exchange between trainees and alumni and foster global networking across the organization

Solution: Mystery Meet community for trainees and a global community for all employees

Effect: New connections across cohorts, teams, and countries

“Mystery Meet was introduced to actively strengthen exchange within our trainee community, especially with our alumni. The format creates an environment where new connections form across teams and cohorts, and the network stays alive beyond the program.”

Challenge

In large organizations, connections tend to form within teams or peer groups, while cross-functional relationships often happen by chance.

This was also the case in Deutsche Telekom’s StartUp! trainee program. While strong bonds naturally develop within each trainee cohort, exchange between different cohorts, as well as with alumni, often falls short in day-to-day work.

Yet this type of exchange is particularly valuable: it enables knowledge sharing, new perspectives, and long-term connections beyond the trainee program.

At the same time, a broader challenge emerges in a global organization like Deutsche Telekom:
How do you connect employees who would otherwise never interact in their daily work?

The goal was to create a format that enables networking and exchange in a way that is simple, low-barrier, and scalable, both for the trainee community and for employees across the entire organization.

Solution

With Mystery Meet, Deutsche Telekom leverages a networking initiative on the Mystery Minds platform that regularly matches employees randomly creating new conversations across the organization.

The format intentionally creates a casual space for exchange beyond formal meetings. Employees connect with colleagues from different departments, countries, or roles and gain insights into topics and perspectives they would rarely encounter in their day-to-day work.

Deutsche Telekom currently uses several (global) communities, two of them are the StartUp! Trainee Community and the global Mystery Meet Community.

StartUp! Trainee Community

Within the trainee community, Mystery Meet connects active trainees with program alumni, enabling exchange across different cohorts and keeping the network alive beyond the program.

Current metrics:

  • 86 members
  • 85 total matches
  • 40 matches in the last 30 days

For many trainees, Mystery Meet offers a unique opportunity to connect with areas of the company they would otherwise never interact with.

„As an active trainee, Mystery Meet is a great way to network with people in fields you would otherwise have no contact with in your daily working life.“
Karoline Siebürger, Finance Trainee

Participants consistently report inspiring conversations, often with colleagues from entirely different functions or countries.

One memorable moment emerged during a conversation with a software engineer: they discovered they had a mutual connection who had previously worked with one of them abroad. Without Mystery Meet, they likely would have never met.

Moritz Brantz, GEPRA Trainee, highlights another key benefit of the format:

„Mystery Meet is the perfect way to stay in touch with program alumni and gain new perspectives in conversation.

For him, reconnecting with alumni he hadn’t seen in a while proved especially valuable. These conversations provided practical insights, for example, around internal career opportunities at Telekom demonstrating how informal networking can lead to tangible knowledge transfer.

As the community continues to grow, a new need has emerged: connecting alumni with each other, as many of them have not yet had the chance to meet.

Global Mystery Meet Community

Beyond the trainee program, Deutsche Telekom also uses Mystery Meet as a global networking initiative for employees across all departments and locations.

This creates regular conversations between colleagues who would otherwise rarely (or never) interact.

Current metrics:

  • 3,399 members
  • 28,799 total matches
  • 1,000 matches in the last 30 days

For many participants, the biggest value lies in gaining visibility beyond their own area of the organization.

"In a big corporation as DT the own department can quickly become a “lonely island” and you loose track of what happens around you. Mystery meet is a great way to talk to other people, learn more about the corporation and more about challenges and solutions from other departments."

Impact

Mystery Meet conversations consistently lead to new perspectives, knowledge exchange, and cross-functional connections.

Participants report that they meet colleagues they would otherwise never have spoken to and that these conversations often go far beyond small talk.

"Mystery Meet is a simple but powerful way to break down silos and create real connections across the organization. It gives us the opportunity to speak with colleagues you wouldn’t normally meet in our daily work. For me, that’s what truly enables radical collaboration and fosters an “uncorporate” mindset.

In some cases, these conversations even lead to concrete collaboration or new ideas. For example, a casual exchange about internal challenges resulted in two teams connecting and shortly after, jointly implementing a process improvement.

On a personal level, many participants also describe the experience as genuinely meaningful.

„Mystery Meet allows you to get to know a huge variety of people from the Deutsche Telekom group worldwide, often these conversations can make your day and leave you with learnings like discovering new cultural things, coincidences of life and new areas of the company you had no clue about.“

Bruno Koci, Digital Performance Manager & Alumni of the StartUp! Trainee Program

And ultimately, this is exactly what makes the format so impactful:

„Mystery Meet is amazing, you never know who you will meet, but it always leaves you inspired and connected!”
